QUALITY CIRCLES IN SCHOOLS
What is Quality Circle (QC) ?
Quality Circle is the concept introduced by Dr. Ishikawa to the floor level employees. It is a small group of first line operators to identify their job related problems, analyse, solve and implement the solutions found by utilising Quality Circle tools, techniques and concepts.
Practising this concept helps the people to acquire knowledge in problem solving process and continually improve their skill for their self and mutual development.
It gives opportunity to show their capability, hidden talent and creative thinking. This philosophy is , if we focus on the development of individual , individuals so developed will develop the organization.
That is why Japanese say “Before developing the product, we develop the people”. Many Industries are practising the concept for development of
people who can produce Quality Products, Services & Job.
Definitely, this concept will work wherever group functions be it a Society or Home, as every group is facing various kinds of problem. We can very well say this concept is applicable to Schools also.
Quality Circles can be formed among students, among staff. Awareness about QC Concept, Nomination of QC Coordinator and facilitator, Training in QC Tools and Technique are the process for forming quality Circle in any Organaisation.
Initially we can form 3 or 4 Circles. It is interesting to note that the following are some of the problems/projects identified by students themselves.
Creativity in Selecting QC name (staff Quality Circle)
Tulsi, with its Botanical name Ocium Sanctum is a unique plant associated with Hindu mythology and religion. Tulsi is known for its righteousness and self purity which can be reused. It can purify anything in its association.

Why 5S in School ?
5 ‘S’ is a structured program to systematically achieve organisation cleanliness and standardising the Work Place.
There is a popular saying that CLEANLINESS IS GODLINESS. This is applicable in all walks of life. Social and Economic status of any Society is seen by its roads and ways, public places like Temples, Residential Houses, Schools, their cleanliness and their discipline of maintaining them.
Mr. Takashi Osada Japanese Quality Management Guru has adopted this concept and made it applicable to Industrial Organisation. 5 ‘S’ is a system with 5 steps for good house keeping, maintenance of clean & safe work place, machines, equipments etc.
FIVE ‘S’ SYSTEM
According to Takashi Osada, if we look around the place whether it is home or work area, we can always find lots of room for improvement.
In short, 5 ‘S’ focus on abnormalities and bring them to surface and address them to reduce them for clean environment. Otherwise it is known as “Work Place Management”.
This concept is not only applicable to Industries but also to Offices, Homes and Schools.
4th ‘S’ SEIKETSU--Standardisation is very important. If 1 ‘S’ , 2’S; & 3 ‘S’ is not carried out regularly, the working place gets spoiled. Therefore, the system should be Standardised for carrying out 1 ‘S’, 2 ‘S’ & 3 ‘S’. Adopt Visual Management to prevent any wrong deed and mistakes happenings.
5th ‘S’ SHITSUKE—Self-Discipline
All should follow the 5th ‘S’ –the rules made and systems developed in the first 4 ‘S’ & should jointly co-operate in keeping all items (School bags, Tiffin Boxes, Shoes, Note Books etc.) in the assigned places. This will keep your children always neat & clean.
If we teach 5 ‘S’ Concept to school children, the following are the advantages:
Ø Self Discipline
Ø Road Safety
Ø Self confidence for self management
Ø Developing Team Spirit among children
Ø Improves Quality of the student
Ø Changes in attitude to help others
Ø Clean Class room & Environment
Ø Reduces the burden, tension of parents & teachers
Ø Students can well save rather manage their time for better utilisation
Ø It focuses on Personal hygienic factor. The children will learn good habits and improve their health
Ø Self development through Self Discipline
Ø IN SHORT 5’S’ IS GATE WAY TO MAKE THE STUDENTS TO BE A RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN
PHOTOS:
5’S’ at National Level can make the Nation more competitive if we adopt 5’S’ practices
’ at Schools
’ on roads, Public Places
’ in Homes
’ in Hospitals
In Manufacturing & Service Organisations
“Catch them young”. If this concept is practiced by all the Schools in India, we will be growing youth as very Responsible Citizen
Viewers are at liberty to give their comments & valuable suggestions to make 5 ‘S’ at Schools and educational Institutions as popular Concept
